    Afternoon everyone,

How are other groups handling the costs associated with interface requests from referrers?  We have legal advice that states that the referrer should bear some portion of the cost but know that others are doing different things.

    Thanks,

    Brad

Hi Brad - I have limited experience with this, since our imaging centers run on EPIC, but several years ago we decided to pursue HL7 support for a private practice. The private practice  pushed hard, and didn't have any out-of-pocket.   Their vendor was a subscription-service platform.   Shortly after the expenditure of $$$ and time, and running the interface successfully, they determined to switch vendors.   All effort  and $ lost.   Not my most brilliant management decision, but lesson to require the providers to put in their own funds to substantiate commitment to the process.   Hope others share their experience.

Our policy is that we pay our vendors, and expect the other side to pay theirs.

    Brad,

Our attornies also advised us that the referring office would have to pay a percentage of the cost of the interface.  It has been several years since we did an interface with a small office, but I believe it was about 20%.  Every EHR company that we dealt with would tell us that the lab usually pays for both sides of the interface.  We always looked at an interface as an added value that we could give a referring office.

    Thanks,
