Practice Management

    Hello Colleagues,

Our group is in the process of revising our metrics in various areas of the practice and I would like to know what others are doing in this arena.  More specifically, what are you doing to:

    1. Measure Physician Productivity and Efficiency?  What dashboard items are you looking at or other measurements?  Per shift or per hour requirements / measurements? Benchmarks?

    1. Measuring Quality including group performance – In other words, if you were providing a report to the hospital or to a prospective hospital, what measurements or critical values are you tracking to prove you are doing a great job?  What metrics do you track as part of your hospital agreements now?

    1. Any other "analytics" that add value to the efficient management of the practice or for demonstrating value to external stakeholders

If you prefer, please contact me directly at mlangenberg@utrad.com or call me at 865-803-2973.

    Thanks so much!

We notice dramatic differences for the same radiologist depending on several factors,

    1. Location - the output differs depending on at which hospital or facility a radiologist is working.
    2. Inpatient vs. outpatient imaging center can also make a difference which is a drill down on the location factor.
    3. Shift - even within the same location, output can differ for the same radiologist at the same location but for different shifts (early, late, etc.)  In our practice, some shifts are designate and expected just to hit the list while others may field more of the clinical questions from treating physicians.
    4. Sub-Specialty - IR, diagnostic, and mammography RVUs are quite different and do not reflect reality of how hard a radiologist is actually working.
    5. Experience - we do find that the younger radiologists are not as efficient as the more seasoned veterans.

These are the main issues we deal try to address.  One of the ways we do so is to track productivity for each seat or shift at each location.  We also group our radiologists by IR, heavy mammo readers (those who work a majority of the mammo shifts), and diagnostic (which we sometime drill down further to look at just MSK, body imagers, etc.).

We also look at several metrics including total work RVUs, RVUs/day, RVUs/procedure, total collections, collections per day (my favorite), collections/RVU, total procedures, procedures per day, and collections per procedure.  No one metric tells the whole story, and even with each of these, we don't get the full picture.  We always try to impose reality such as the PACS at Hospital B is slow and frequently has issues loading studies.  We all know where the inherent issues are in the practice, but that does get accounted for to some degree when we look at the productivity by shift or seat at each location.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Wayne,

Thank you for sharing.  I too am interested in knowing which tool you are using to track metrics at Pueblo.

    Thank you,

We use a combination of tools currently including Excel, our billing company’s data analytics (ZotecPartners) but have engaged Mike 5 to create a database analytics tool with a Tableau interface to do it all in one place.

If you missed it, there is a RBMA survey on this very topic that was distributed Thursday by the Data Committee and the Payor Committee of the RBMA.  The goal is to identify metrics used by practices for internal and external purposes.  Please consider responding to that survey with your practice's metrics, and reporting standards.  I am told the committee hopes to get the results by 3/1.

"In our constant quest to provide our members information that will grow their practice the RBMA Data and Research Committee and Payor Relations Committees have been working on a process to develop quality measure benchmarking. As this information is developed it will assist our members and their radiology practices to develop stronger ties within hospital and payor contracting.

The initial survey tool will help develop the basic quality measures that may now be included within imaging professional services agreements and payor contracts. We will also ask questions concerning how your practice may use these tools internally and the definitions and formulas that may be used.

RBMA has always prided itself in offering research information that our members can utilize to expand their relationships. This survey is no different. We ask your assistance by taking a few minutes to complete the survey by March 1, 2019.

    Thank you Beth!

Just jumping in to clarify that each survey link is individualized (so we do not have accidental duplicate responses), so the link Beth included in her post no longer works. If you didn't see the email invitation to complete the survey sent to you from RBMA last Thursday, February 7, please contact us at membership@rbma.org and we will resend you the invitation.
