    We are searching for an external company to provide a comprehensive billing/coding audit. Does anyone have recommendations or experience with this process? What are the major factors that you considered when evaluating an audit company?

    Recommendations for what to look for in a billing/coding audit company:

    1. Experience with billing processes so you can get recommendations for improvement.  Some companies feel they have done their job if they only point out the obvious problems (increasing days in A/R for example) but can't tell you where to look next to improve the process.  There will be a difference between how an accounting firm will review things and how a consultant with experience in radiology operations will look at the world.
    2. Radiology Certified Coder (RCC or RCCIR) for the coding audit.  Again, you want recommendations for correction/improvement.  Coding problems usually result from deficiencies in documentation and you need to tools to correct.
    3. A data-driven report.  Again, you want specifics regarding where you can prioritize for improvement.  If you get the vague, "You're leaving a million dollars on the table" (I won't name who usually says that and throws the rads into a frenzy) that type of comment won't help you. 
    4. Since you reference an imaging center, look for imaging center operational experience if possible.  (This may be more difficult to find, however).  In an imaging center, you should have more control over processes-beginning with scheduling-so again, know where to look for improvement opportunities.   

     

    Know what you want to accomplish with your audit.  You can find areas for improvement in even the best-run practice and it's easy for a consultant to tell you to scrap everything and make a major change.  Sometimes that's the answer and sometimes you need to tweak the system.  If you have deficiencies everywhere you turn and have had no luck changing things in the past, that indicates a major change may be in order.
