We currently cover our hospitals 24/7 with in house neuro coverage. We have "Nightwatch" rads that work from 9 pm - 7 am. (employees not outsourced). How are other groups handling coverage? Types of shifts they work, hybrid shifts like working evening shifts sometimes instead of overnight? How many rads to do you have to cover the 365 nights.. Back up plans from partners if one is sick and a partner has to cover??

Any input or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Holly

    Holly,

CIA has three Night Radiologists who work 10 PM – 7 AM.  They each work a third of the 365 nights, so about 121 shifts each.  They are employed physicians.  They work out a schedule among themselves.  They back up one another in emergencies.  They can moonlight and work day shifts if any of the regular shareholders want to sell their shifts.  The full time shareholders and shareholder track doctors work evenings and weekends.  There is a 3-10 PM shift and a 5-11 PM shift, as well as a 11 AM to 7:00 PM shift on Monday – Friday.  IR is separate from these shifts and has their own call pool.  Weekends have 4 imaging doctors working 7:00 AM-11:00 PM in 7-8 hour shifts throughout the day.  Generally there are at least 2-3 of them working at the same time on the weekends.  There are 33 physicians and we cover 7 hospitals and 7 imaging centers and about 10 medical groups with imaging; 4 hospitals with IR.  They are busy!

At RIST in Corpus Christi, TX, we staff 7 diagnostic physicians during the day (8a-5p) and 4 IR.
We have two during evening shifts (changing to 5p-1a and 5:15p-12:15a), with VRad taking over at 1a-8a).
Weekends are 3 Dx Rads (8a-4p x 2 and 4p-11p with VRad taking over at 11p). Also have one IR doc working weekend.

We cover 5 hospitals and 2 wholly owned OP centers.

They do vacation for entire year and it's finkaized by early Oct of preceding year.
I then do IR call for weekdays, weekends and holidays for entire year along with Dx weekends, evening shifts and holidays for entire year.
Failing to mention we have one partner who works 32 weeks of the late evening shift, with two employees covering the same evening shift (of 20 weeks).
One of those two employees works 27 weeks of the 5:15p-12:15a shift (she lives in Colorado).
The remaining Dx partners split the remaining 25 weeks of said shift.

They each work 13 weekends per year.
