Self-calibrating monitors are best for home use because they do not require technical interventions to calibrate them. The reason calibration is important is that if a case is read from a home station and later a malpractice claim arises, without the verification that calibration has occurred so that the reading station meets published guidelines for intensity, pixel size etc., the case is pretty much lost... The cost is minimal for the additional insurance calibration creates. You may also want to check with your malpractice carrier, some actually void your coverage if the reading station does not meet guidelines. This clause, just like the clause voiding of coverage for indemnifications, are often overlooked.
