Can anyone tell me what constitutes 3D reconstruction (CPT's 76376 and 76377)? Do the images need to be rotational?  Color?  Are MIPS images considered 3D?  How can we tell?  This has been under discussion and would like to know how others are coding these.  (I know about CTA and that it is included in the CPT, but want to make sure we are looking at the right images.)

So one example is CT Chest PE with contrast.  The doctors are say MIPS and/or Coronal.

A long time ago we were told that 3D imaging had to be rotational (and sometimes color).

Just curious what others look for in 3D images.

    Thanks!

MIPS can be coded 3D but there are also 2D MIPS or Thick Slab MIPS which are not 3D.  This is an area where the radiologists really need to standardize their language in their reports when it comes to MIPS to clarify when it is 3D vs. thick slab (2D).
