  • 1.  Supervision of Diagnostic Tests by APP's

    Posted 04-01-2022 14:01
Can someone clarify the Medicare supervision rules as they currently apply to Physician Assistants?

    Can they perform personal supervision?

    Direct supervision?

Does the setting make a difference?

Do the rules change at the end of the PHE?

    Thanks!

    Dave

Effective January of 2021, NPs and PAs were authorized under the Medicare rules to supervise Level 2 diagnostic tests (e.g., contrast studies) under their direct supervision, but only to the extent permitted by state law and their state scope of practice rules. See 42 CFR 410.32(b)(3)(ii). Only physicians can perform general and personal supervision. I've attached the rule, but not sure it will convey via the Forum.

And see our blog posts linked below.

Be aware, that in IDTF settings only physicians proficient in the performance in interpretation of the tests performed at the IDTF can supervise those tests.

In addition to state law and IDTF constraints, radiology groups need to be mindful of the requirements for the type of practitioner their accreditation organization requires for services performed on accredited advanced diagnostic imaging modalities.
