  • 1.  Patient accompanied by minor child

    Posted 02-17-2021 08:23
We had a patient present for a scheduled exam with their minor child in tow. This child was young enough to need supervision while mom was getting her exam.  With staffing issues, some due to Covid-19, we were unable to provide a staff member to supervise the child and the exam was cancelled. Patient was very angry that we could not provide the child care supervision during her visit.  My questions:

    • How does your facility/dept. handle this issue without alienating the patient?
    • Does your facility have a written policy for this situation?
    • Is there any legal liability when having our staff supervise a child for a patient who is behind closed doors getting an exam?
    Thanks for your feedback!

We do not provide child care.  We are not licensed to provide child care.  We don't have the facilities for child care.  We don't want the liability that comes with providing child care.

Vicki - Pre Covid, we had a pretty significant problem with moms bringing their children to appointments.  We now use a scheduling script and a confirmation call process that tells patients we will have to cancel and reschedule their appointments, if they bring a child without another adult to watch.   We believe its a patient safety issue, and the exam is compromised if a patient has a minor in the room. (This is a site with 60-70 US cases/day and lots of moms bring youngsters vs hiring a sitter.)   This messaging at scheduling and confirmation call largely addresses the issue, yet some patients still get to the check-in stage, and our personnel are trained to tell patients we will have to reschedule if they have an unattended youngster.       Hope that helps.
