We are looking at options for one of our radiologists who is going to be working part time but for whom we'd like to continue most core benefits. Our current benefit providers, including BCBSMS, include a pretty standard requirement that the employee be full time. They've defined that as 30 hours or more actively at work on average per week, excluding call. That's made it impossible to thread that needle no matter how hard we try.

What options have any of you found for coverage for folks in similar circumstances? We are going to work through local agents but any other suggestions based on experience much appreciated. I am hopeful I can snag something through the ACR or similar, along the lines of some of the LTD and life insurance options available with ease through the AICPA and similar professional organizations.

    TIA

    George,

We have set them up as COBRA on our plans, but still pay the premiums, or compensate the doctors for their premiums. The clock starts on this, however, so it is only good for 18 months and then they have to get other insurance on their own or go back to full time to be reinstated in the plan.

    Thank you,

George - We were able to work with our benefits broker to define classes of coverage and handled that way. Classes could be employment location or hours.  The benefit cost for a part time radiologist doesn't decrease because they are working less, so we reduced wage to offset.  Cobra is another option.   Most benefits define a minimum number of hours of work required, yet paid vacation hours qualify, so we were able to use those definitions in some cases.    Moving from full time status to part time is pretty standard practice for those nearing retirement, or those with the desire to achieve more work-life balance.  Happy to chat on phone if easier.
