We have received notice from Optum Pay, formerly known as Electronic Payments & Statements (EPS), they are releasing a paid version of Optum Pay.  This is a portal my staff uses heavily as we manage all of our UnitedHealthcare payments and payments from other companies within the UnitedHealthcare product line.  If a practice stays with the free version they are limited to 2 users, will no longer be able to create remittance PDF, or access historical remittances after 30 days.  The charge to use the paid version of Optum Pay is 0.5% per total payment amount, which in our practice adds up quickly. I am not sure how a large organization will be able to limit themselves to 2 users .  Also to not be able to have the ability to create PDF versions of remittances seems a bit heavy handed.  Are most of your practices switching over to the paid version?

Personally, I can't stand these schemes (though maybe "scam"  is the more appropriate word). Any claim payment arrangement that puts the burden on the provider (either financial burden or extra work/time) just to get paid, shouldn't be allowed. What's next? "You can send electronic claims to us only through our portal, for this small fee..."

My somewhat sarcastic response is that we all start passing this charge onto the patient. Tell them there is a processing charge THEIR Insurer has added for this practice to submit and process their insurance claim and that the cost must be paid by them unless they would like to pay cash for today's visit then the processing fee will be waived..... See how fast insurers continue to charge a processing fee........
