I am wondering what other groups policies are regarding extreme hair color for employees that deal directly with patients and referring offices.

This has taken a cycle through the courts relatively recently. The key facet of the case was the defendant's (UPS's) ability '...to demonstrate a consistent application of its personal appearance guidelines.'

Policy Banning Extreme Hair Colors Upheld
A former employee who was repeatedly counseled for wearing bright-burgundy braids unsuccessfully claimed that her termination from employment was based on race discrimination when the employer was able to demonstrate a consistent application of its personal appearance guidelines. The plaintiff, who is black, worked as a customer service representative for United Parcel Service (UPS) at its facility in Overland Park, Kan.

We address this in our manual along with body tattoos and piercings:

Visible jewelry in body piercings (other than the ear) will be asked to be removed.   Ear piercing jewelry should be limited to no more than three/ear.  Body tattoos must be kept covered while at work.  Outlandish hair coloring (non-traditional &/or unnatural hair coloring) is not acceptable.

We do not restrict hair color.  We have a few employees in patient facing positions that have unnatural hair colors and this does not negatively impact the patient's experience. I am pretty conservative personally and I thought more patients would have issues with unnatural hair colors especially in my area as there is a larger retirement community by my clinic but surprising it has not had a negative impact on patient satisfaction.  The patients seem to be open minded as long as the healthcare professional does their job well and they are compassionate.  I can see pro's and con's on bother sides.  Either way just be sure it is implemented and applied consistently.

The right standard probably depends greatly on the community and expectations of the patient population.  I live in a college town and go to a nice little coop grocery store where it would appear that extensive tattoos, ZZ Top beards, unusual hair colors, facial piercings, and/or gauges. are mandatory for employees. It doesn't seem to bother anyone as long as the service and product is excellent.  On the other hand, I know there are more conservative areas within my market where that sort of appearance wouldn't fly, especially if service were sub par.

I do think the service level makes a huge difference in acceptance.

I have to reply. Would a radiologist that colors his/her hair be unnatural? I’m just sayin!

Great conversation that is very dependent on the culture of the location.
