I would be most appreciative if you would share your process for handling hospital cases that might be covered by work comp, but the employer and work comp carrier are unknown.

What steps do you take to identify the responsible party (employer or carrier)?

Do you bill the patient if they are unresponsive?

    Thanks!

    Dave

We research in the hospital systems we have access to (mostly documents scanned in by hospital staff) to try to get a carrier name, address, claim #, etc. This is frequently fruitless.

If we don't come up with anything, we send a letter to the patient requesting the information (also, quite often fruitless) and start sending them statements. If it ages out, we send to collection.

Here in the State of Oregon, we have a website that you can verify a businesses work comp coverage when you have the employer name.  However, if you do not have who the employer is, that would be a problem.

My billing company advised that they try to contact the patient via phone and if no avail, a letter is sent out to them. Our hospital system will update information but it can take up to 2 weeks after their services for them to update.  They check the hospital system again and most of the time they do locate the updated information by then and they were able to submit.

    Hi David,

We put the patient on a "possible Workers Comp" status that generates a fill in the blanks letter that goes to the patient.  It basically says that we understand they were seen for a work related injury but we need the following information in order to bill a claim for them.  It also instructs them to take the form to their employer if they don't have the information.  We have fairly good success with it.

    Have a great day!
