  • 1.  Hospital-Based Radiologist Support Staff

    Posted 04-24-2018 16:50

I would be interested in hearing from groups who have staff supporting their hospital-based radiologists in their daily work, in order to enhance radiologist efficiency.  I am specifically interested in support that is, or could be provided remotely from where the radiologist is sitting.

    What are their general duties?

What is the approximate ratio of support staff to rads on duty?

What hours is the support service provided?

In general, what is their background/training/experience (techs/nurses/clerical, etc.)?

What communication modes are used between rads and staff (phone, IM, etc.)?

If you have a job description or something similar you would be willing to share, that would be awesome.

    Thanks for any insight!

Doug et al, please see my answers below:

I would be interested in hearing from groups who have staff supporting their hospital-based radiologists in their daily work, in order to enhance radiologist efficiency.  I am specifically interested in support that is, or could be provided remotely from where the radiologist is sitting.  We have three clerical staff, as well as IT support and a person who spends 50% of their time on "quality" issues.  They all work remotely out of our business office.

What are their general duties?  Clerical staff are two "reading room coordinators", plus a clerical person devoted to assisting with outpatient IR.  The RR Coordinators handle phone calls, deal with some minor IT issues and order the docs lunch.  The IR person tees up all the paperwork for scheduling an elective OP IR procedure.  She works with the scheduling staff at 4 hospitals.  The Quality Director handles any protocol issues, is the liaison between the Rads and the 100+ Techs who work at various hospitals, imaging centers and telerad.  He runs statistics and deals with questions from Techs.  There is also a PACS administrator for our imaging centers and telerad work, who also works with the Rads on VR.

What is the approximate ratio of support staff to rads on duty?  There are approximately 17 Rads on duty during weekday hours of 7 AM – 6:00 PM.

What hours is the support service provided?  7 AM – 6:00 PM

In general, what is their background/training/experience (techs/nurses/clerical, etc.)?  Both Quality and PACS are Rad Techs.  The other three are clerical.

What communication modes are used between rads and staff (phone, IM, etc.)?  Both IM and phone.  Email also.  I'd say 50% IM, 30% phone and 20% email.

If you have a job description or something similar you would be willing to share, that would be awesome.  Is there a place to put JD on the website?  If so, I am happy to do so, or can send directly to Doug.

With the new Connect RBMA software you can attach files to your emails.  There's an "attach" button toward the bottom of the page, under the signature block and the original message.  It's a welcome new feature over the old forums!
