  • 1.  Remote Radiologist (Employed) reading from CA for FL group

    Posted 01-29-2020 11:25
We have a physician in our group who is moving to CA and will be allowed to remain employed with our group here in FL. We are working on the planning/details of this to ensure we will meet all of the rules/laws/guidelines of doing this. We know that we'll have to get him credentialed for the CA Medicare contractor since he's performing the interpretation from CA, but would like to get feedback from other groups who may have already been down this path. We're working with our Practice Management company through this process, but are also seeking feedback from others who've actually done this. Any specific details and feedback that can be provided to help us ensure we are doing all that is needed would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Scott Fortson

    Hi Scott,

We haven't worked with this arrangement in California, but have done so in numerous other states.

    1. The group will need to enroll in Medicare with California as well as the physician.
    2. All other carriers will be credentialed and billed locally.
    3. You will need to follow all of the applicable California employment laws.
    4. You will need to file state payroll reports with California.
    5. One state that we've worked with also required the group to obtain a state business license.  I'm not sure if California will require that or not.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions you might have.

We are about to be in the same situation. Am I correct that only traditional Medicare requires separate billing of professional services from the reading location? i.e. Medicare advantage, other government (military) payers and commercial plans are billed as is reading is in our home state?

    Thank you,

Bruce, you are correct. Only traditional Medicare requires the true reading location to populate on the claim.
