"Please contact our office if you are in critical need of PPE supplies. We will make them available to you at no charge"

I discovered that approximately two weeks ago all medical offices were contacted by our state's health department.

Their message was roughly "Please certify that you have sufficient PPE to protect patients and staff for a minimum of five days. Spot inspections. Anyone found in violation will be fined and forced to close."

The statement in my subject line of this message was FAXed to all our current and previous physician-referrers.

I received over 100 calls since last Friday. Two physicians called me – practically crying in frustration – as they had only a few appropriate masks for themselves and their staff, many of which had been worn well past their intended lifespan. One had none.

All found their usual suppliers (McKesson) were out of stock or on allocation.  Non-medical sources advise delivery times in July.

In my search for these items (masks/hand sanitizer/extra gloves, etc.) to protect our physicians/staff/patients at our MRI centers I am fortunate to have reliable sources and have much more than I could ever use.

More referring-physician facilities call each day (some of whom never referred - OK as that is not a requirement) and I have been busy paying personal visits as I am able.

    Please consider my experience.

Is this good marketing? Maybe - but that is not my intent.

In my opinion it's just the right thing to do.

If you have any spare masks, hand sanitizer, etc. please consider supporting the referring doctors who refer and support you - most especially when they have this critical need – and remember that our local emergency rooms, fire and police departments serve us all.

If anyone could assist all RBMA members with source of supply, please post this information here so that all may be safe – doctors, staff and patients alike.

    With my most sincere thanks.

Bill – While I applaud your actions, it may not be totally allowed even under the current circumstances. I would need an attorney to chime in if they feel they can without offering legal advice. But offering anything for referring physicians can be seen as an inducement for their referrals, which you may have been able to circumvent by making this offer to all providers in your market even those that could never refer services to your facility. The other concern is the Physician Payment Sunshine Act. The value of the PPE you provide may require reporting, dependent upon the value of the PPE. I am not certain if any of the waivers presently enforce allow for an exception to the requirements of the Sunshine Act. It's worth a look to be certain that by doing a good thing you have not just open a large risk corridor for your group..... Hope that's not too depressing.....

Thank you for your concern, Keith.

I can't imagine that anyone would consider this anything other than a public service in our time of an insidious and universal health crisis that has seen too many deaths and untold misery with no clear end in sight.

    Warmest Regards

    Bill

As much as I appreciate your altruism Bill, I have to agree with Keith on this.  Things that make good "public service" or "marketing" sense in any other industry are frequently illegal in radiology.

I'm hoping some of our legal experts will weigh in, but at a minimum think you should run this idea past a knowledgeable healthcare attorney before going further with your program. PK

Bill.. I hope you are 100% correct. But I've had far too many times that I have been asked to help groups deal with the unforeseen negative consequences of an act that was only initiated from the most true, positive and altruistic intentions.... So maybe I've become a little cynical and too cautious.... I've just found that with a little planning and innovative thought almost everything is possible even within the constraints of the legislative environment of healthcare.....
