Auto accidents

    Good morning everyone,

We are a hospital base group and many times patients are seen in the ER due to auto accidents, although the auto information is not available.

The patients demographics are coming over with MVA with no detail information as primary and the Health Insurance is coming over as secondary.

I was wondering what other groups were doing on addressing these patients.

Our billing company is deleted all the information and making these patients self pay.

Many times the patients do not call  and if they do, they might instructed to file with the medical insurance which can be past filing or they

    age out to collection.

    Any help will be appreciated
    Thank you
    Donna

We hold them for two weeks to allow new information to come in over our hospital interface. (The hope is that valid auto insurance/claim info will be obtained by the hospital, which triggers an update of our information as well.) If that doesn't happen, we bill the health insurance, making sure the claim is correct - ie, with accident indicator, date, etc. If health insurance denies (I believe they usually do) we then bill the patient.

Our experience in the past was much the same as yours - if you count on the patient to provide valid info, you end up with either exhausted PIP (if billing to the auto insurance) or timely filing (if billing to health insurance).

We follow a protocol similar to Rick's group.

Thank you to both of you,

although I was wondering how does the hospital provide updated insurance information to your groups.

Do they send a separate file weekly?

We receive HL7 demographics files daily. Any time the information at the hospital is changed (or, at least the information that is relevant to us) a new HL7 message is created and added to the files we receive. So if the patient contacts the hospital with MVA claim info and the hospital enters it, we get the update.

This would involve a phone call to ask for the information.

We have near real time HL7 interfaces with our hospital partners.  When a patient provides the hospital with updated insurance information (including auto ins), the hospital sends an HL7 "update" message with the demographics which get sent to the billing company.

I have tried to do this and the patients don't always return the calls.

    Donna,

Follow-up with your hospital. Typically they receive information days or weeks later.

This is a little scary.  If your billing company isn't cleaning up this kind of information, you have to wonder what else their missing?
