We're searching for a service that allows us to send and receive DICOM images.  Specifically, our intended use is for the sending and receiving of prior image and report requests thus reducing the number of CDs we burn and deliver or mail out.

Does anyone have any suggestions or can you point me in the right direction?

Nuance Powershare seems to be a commonly used platform for this.

Yes, Nuance PowerShare is gaining popularity.  Unless it has changed recently, the downside is that you can only send/receive with other PowerShare users.

We use VPN connections between the regional facilities which allow for a PACS to PACS transfer.  This is very inexpensive to set up and maintain.  Since most of your prior request are regional, this will usually cover at least 95% of your requests in and out.

Here are some others you can check out.

These services require the user on the other end to install software to download, and we had problems finding facilities that would allow it.

Citrix has a system for Medical Image sharing that will allow you to send and receive from anyone.  You can even use it to send images to the patient, via a secure link.  They will sign a B.A.A. with an enterprise account.  The service is called Citrix ShareFile.

MatrixRay from Nautilus is very affordable ($1 per study uploaded), but requires the other end to install software.

I am on a PACS forum, and a lot of the users really like AMBRA, but state it is very costly.  Ambrahealth.com

    Thanks,

    David and Brian,

Thank you for the responses. Your feedback was very helpful. We'll be evaluating several options over the coming weeks, including those you mentioned. I'll follow up with our decision and any insights that come from our evaluations.

Take a look at Ambra. Works really well and is not dependent on whether other facilities are on the platform. Ambra's subscription model may not make sense for everyone, but it's a great alternative to all the issues associated with burning CD's.
