  • 1.  Virtual Payments by Payors

    Posted 10-09-2018 10:30

I am embarrassed  to admit that I just found out that insurance companies have been paying us via "virtual credit cards" and that we have been paying fees to get paid!  Now, I understand, there is an intermediary company, Zelis Payments, who will be making the payment via EFT, and our fees will be reduced. However the fact remains we are still paying a fee to get paid!   My question is, can we not demand payment by check in order to avoid more costs? Has anyone successfully told the payors that virtual payments with fees attached will no longer be accepted?  If so, did it affect your Days in AR?

    Thank you.

We actually called Zellis and "opted out" of their credit card payments. They were very nice and sent us checks within 7-14 business days.

    Keith,

We have been "opting-out" of VCC payments for a long time. Really have not seen any impact to the A/R as it typically has been the smaller payors. There are a number of articles related to this, one from the AMA is https://wire.ama-assn.org/ama-news/physicians-protected-health-plan-credit-card-fees and I know there is a form out there to make a formal complaint if a payor doesn't comply. We've had no issues with them rolling to checks (although they all want to recite the litany of ....."how long it's going to take, the check might get lost in the mail, ya da, ya da, ya da....").

And no embarrassment..... that's what this forum and all of us are here for, to help where and when we can!

    Hope that helps!

Any time our office receives a virtual payment we call the insurance company and "opt" out. The insurance will then cut a check in 7-14 days. We have also opted out of Zeluis, they too charge fee's to get paid!
