  • 1.  CC Diagnostic Reports to PCPs

    Hi,

Do any practices routinely collect PCP information and then CC the PCP on all Diagnostic Reports without it being expressly requested by the Ordering Physician or Patient?  We feel if the Ordering Physician or Patient wanted the PCP to receive a report, they would make the request.

    Thanks!

    Here are my thoughts.

I would be comfortable doing so assuming the "information" came from the patient AND if you include how you will use this information in your HIPAA policy.  In this case the patient would have provided the information to you willingly and you have let them know how you intend to use it.

The question then shifts to future visits.  If the cc physician will remain in the system and the next report would also be cc'd to them, I believe  your HIPAA policy should also make that clear that the cc physicians previously approved will remain cc'd until the patient tells you to remove them.  This protects you from having to check to see if they left the field blank at future visits.  Without that clarification the patient could assume that day's report would not get sent since they left the field blank, when in fact your system may do so.  By making this clear in your HIPAA policy you shift the burden to the patient to let you know to do something different.

I'll be interested to hear what others say.

Thank you, Michael!  Our system will not auto-send CC reports without manual input, so the patient would need to specify every time.  Our other worry is patient's seeing the question on our intake forms and listing physicians that may be irrelevant (for example cc'ing a cardiologist on a routine bone density).  We would then risk potential over-sharing which could negatively impact our relationship with some providers.  I am curious to see what other practices are currently doing and why.  We are re-evaluating our process and I'd like to get as many different points of view as possible.

    Thank you!
