  • 1.  Timing of Sharing Patient Reports on Patient Portals

    Posted 02-19-2020 11:28
    Good Morning,

Hoping for feedback on the timeframe in which you post your diagnostic reports for your patients on your patient portal.  We have received feedback from oncology providers concerning posting too early before they can give a cancer diagnosis to their patients.  On the other hand, we get patient complaints about their reports not being available sooner.

What is your timeframe for posting diagnostic reports to your patient portal?
How do you manage complaints from your referring community?
Do you receive patient complaints about your timeline?

    Stacy,

We release our reports after 72 hours.  This was the requirement from Stage 2 of M.U., and we just left the patient portal at the same setting.  If you participate in the ACI portion of MACRA, you have to provide the patient with timely access to the report.  According to Helathmonix.com, CMS defines timely access as four business days.  If you are not participating in ACI, I don't believe there is a restriction.

When we had providers complain about the patient getting their report before they had a chance to review the report sent to the provider's office, we told them we were sorry, but we are required by M.U. to give the patient access through the portal after 72-hours.  Most of them understood when we told them it was a compliance thing.  We did find that some referring offices were scanning our report into their EHR, and it was immediately available to the patient.

    Thanks,
