Kim,
Both of your hospitals are on Epic, but they both were on Meditech before implementing Epic. We have always gotten an accession number, MRN, DO.S., etc. It has been a while, but I believe we had to extract the accession number, and other exam specific information, from the report. Our reports came in a flat text file with fixed field lengths. We had to program our HL7 engine to pull this information and create an ORU message. We would get the field map from the hospital that defines how many characters the each field is, and what information is in it. I spent about 40 hours setting this up, but I was brand new to HL7 at the time.
The demographics files that came from the hospitals did not have any exam information.
I don't know if these systems had the capability to send an HL7 message or not, but if they can, I can't see any reason why you could not get the exam information in the message.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Brian Williams
