Most insurers restrict reimbursement if studies are ordered by the patient. In theory, the physician can order the exam but it will likely not be reimbursed. Then you have an issue with writing it off or charging for the service. You need to have a policy in place to write it off and apply that policy uniformly to all physicians seeking services... It's better to just have them get an order from an outside physician....

Agree with Keith. Medicare will not pay tests a physician orders for himself/herself, nor can a physician place orders for their spouse or other members of the physician's household. Of course, Medicare rules require that tests be ordered by physicians who use the test results to provide treatment management for the patient.
