  • 1.  IDTF and LMRT

    Posted 10-05-2022 18:38

    Good afternoon.

A local Community College in Texas has started a Limited Medical Radiologic Technologist (LMRT) program.  These technologists will be able to perform most x-ray exams, with some limitations on specific exams.  We would like to offer a clinical site for an LMRT student, with the potential to hire in the future.  Due to staffing shortages and the fact that their scope of work has increased (they can perform more studies now), it would be ideal to hire an LMRT to work alongside a Registered Technologist (RT).

Below is the certification/license an LMRT will hold after graduation:

We have several IDTF locations and know that all enrolling IDTFs must meet the applicable technician licensure, certification or credentialing requirements at the time of their enrollment.  I have pulled the IDTF Local Coverage Article, A53252  which states the non-physician personnel credentialing requirements list "general radiographer" for routine x-ray exams.

    42 CFR §410.33

    (c) Nonphysician personnel.

    (1) Except as otherwise stated in paragraph (c)(2) of this section, any nonphysician personnel used by the IDTF to perform tests must demonstrate the basic qualifications to perform the tests in question and have training and proficiency as evidenced by licensure or certification by the appropriate State health or education department. In the absence of a State licensing board, the technician must be certified by an appropriate national credentialing body. The IDTF must maintain documentation available for review that these requirements are met.

    ASK:

    1. Does an LMRT meet the definition of a general radiographer at an IDTF location?
