A client is considering hiring administrative staff as a reading room assistant and we're looking for ballpark pay rates.  As it would be in a hospital with evening and weekend hours, it seems a med student or resident (or a team of them) would fit the bill.

    Thanks for your thoughts!

    Hello John,
Our group has a team of Radiologist Assistants that we have employed for years.  This team assists with calls and all the radiologist administrative tasks that are not reading related.  This is a crucial part of our hospital relations and keeps our Radiologist reading and not completing administrative tasks improving efficiency and work balance for our doctors.

This position for us is administrative and requires excellent communication, reading skills, multitasking, and organization.  For that reason their base pay is similar to an executive assistant.  Then we have shift differentials for evenings, overnights, and weekends hours.  While I am not able to share a specific number, I hope this is helpful while you consider how you plan to move forward.

    Hi John,

I wish you better luck than I had in the last 2.5 years trying to hire a full team of reading room assts (RRA) in metro Denver on a very large academic campus.
We have one lead, one who did most of the calls, etc. during the day, one who is ROI FT (but part of the team) and one working afternoons that also does ROI on the shift as needed. We finally hired a prn after 2 years of searching, only to have her leave after a few months (this was due to her not understanding prns don't receive benefits). Some of the issues were internal operating challenges, but the biggest challenge was finding qualified candidates that will stay.

I will email you separately with salary info.

Thanks to everyone who responded with facts, figures, and other comments – it has been a great help!

One follow-up question:  If the forum members would respond with a simple YES or NO email, I'd like to get a sense of how prevalent the reading room assistant position is among the groups represented here.  If you want to provide other information, like Academic, Non-profit, For-profit, Imaging Center, etc. that would be great but not required.

    Thanks again for your assistance!

    John
