  • 1.  Automated Breast Ultrasound

    Our facility has incorporated ABUS into its practice.  Recently we had a patient who wanted to forgo a mammogram and have ABUS only citing the desire to not have any radiation.  ABUS does not replace a mammogram and is not the standard of care and no matter how we have tried at assure her the radiation is minimal, she will not relent.  How are other facilities handling this?

    Do you have them do any of the following:
    1)  Have them sign a waiver 
    2)  Read the exam and notate Birads 0
    3)  Turn them away

    I have a call in to our med malpractice folks for guidance but am curious if any of you have already done this.

    We have patients sign a waiver who want to have an ABUS and not a screening mammogram.  They are first referred to a nurse to discuss why mammography is important and not dangerous and that ABUS is not thorough.  If the patient still wants to forego the mammogram, the nurse notes it in the chart and a waiver must be signed before the ABUS is done.  We require the patient to go through the same process each year she refuses mammography.
