    RE: Clinical Trial participation
Working on a market analysis to understand various payment methods/pricing for providing radiologist services to read cases that are for clinical trials (RECIST, RANO, Lugano, etc). Would someone on your team be able to provide some guidance? Any help is appreciated!

    Hi Dianne

From my perspective, two major factors come into play:

Is there a referral relationship involved that requires fair market value pricing, for example is the hospital or a referring practice paying the radiologist?  If so, then we have a standard percentage of Medicare that reflects the overall market.  If not, then I may look for a higher fee, since the people running such trials are frequently willing to pay a premium if you provide good service.  Having said that, you still have offer competitive value you want the business.

Does the service require work beyond the normal review and report?  There is often additional paperwork, conferences to attend, etc.  I want to price accordingly, and will add a reasonable fee for the work over and above the usual scope of the service defined by CPT/HCPCS and RBRVS.  Typically, that additional fee will be based on our estimate of the amount of radiologist time involved x a fair rate for their time.  Depending on the nature and variability of the extra work, this might be priced per case, per exam, hourly with a log, etc.
