    3. What fringe benefits they receive?
    4. Do they perform weeknight or weekend call of any type?

Hi Michael -   We've used NPs and PA's in our practice for more than a decade to support the IR team.   The MGMA just finished their compensation survey and it has wages based on geographic region, specialty, years of experience, etc.   We find that PAs with ED or surgical experience tend to translate best for interventional radiology.  I attached a document that outlines scope of services we've defined.  We tend to avoid getting them involved in GI cases other than modified ba swallows.  Their is a national PA association and if you google it, you will see some answers re going benefits.   We just hired with 18 days vac, 6 holiday, 3 CME, 9 holidays.    We aren't currently using in an oncall capacity but the agreement tells them this may be needed on weekends in the future, and we will work out call pay at that time.   It takes a long time for APPs to become proficient in the imaging services and you will likely need to provide training for US and fluoro.   We've found easily 6 months til solo.   Our experience has also been that the cost of hiring a PA or NP is not covered by the revenue they can generate.  We are happy to break even.     That said they are an important part of our practice, IR job satisfaction much improved when they are there, and it provides a more robust service.      RBMA had a meeting a couple years ago, where a group of APPs out of Louisiana did a solid presentation.  I think its Kim Singletary's (sp?) group.      Good luck

Hi Michael - Thank you Beth for the shout out!

I will be happy to discuss offline salary and benefits costs.  But to answer some of your questions.
    • Yes to nights / weekend call - our PAs work 24/7 - we do pay for call coverage.
    • Yes to performing procedures - I can email you a list of their Protocols / Practice Guidelines
    • We use PTO format for time off - each person receives PTO based on years of service (PTO includes vacation & sick)
      • Year 1-2: 10 days
      • Year 3-4:  15 days
      • Year 5+ :  20 days
    • Benefits include
      • health/dental/vision/LDD for employee with 50% for family coverage
      • CME - 5 days and $3,000 / annual limit
      • Medical malpractice premium / we do not pay tail coverage
      • Retirement contribution thru our PSP&T plan
      • We provide scrubs, lead, lunch/meals during work hours, cell phone allowance,
    .
I agree with Beth that the PA's services do not cover their cost but in our practice we have been able to use our PAs hospital wide to provide PICC services.  This has been very successful and helped to make us a good partner with our facilities.  Our PA team has been instrumental in decreasing the infection rate associated with these procedures which has saved the hospital money that they were previously being penalized thru CMS.  Win-Win!

Happy to discuss with you offline or we can meet up and chat during ParaDigm Shift!

    Best - Kim

Please find attached our PA Guidelines & Protocols that outline the procedures, duties and responsibilities that our PA team perform. The PA update the guidelines each year as we are constantly adding more skills & procedures.  Let me know if you would like this form in Word format and I will email to you directly.

    Thank you!

We are recruiting for PA/NP midlevel providers for our radiology practice. Does anyone know if there are preferences as to hiring an NP versus a PA for this position? . We currently do not have any midlevel providers in our group.
    Thank you for your feedback..

First thing I would do is review any difference in scope of practice/license and supervision requirements in your state.  The licensing boards should be able to provide information on that.

Hi Courtney  -  We've hired both PAs and NPs.  I think it comes down to assessing their years of clinical experience, particularly what is most relevant to the interventional radiology duties (surgery?  ED?).    We've had success with both, but I think PAs have 2000 clinical hours in their training whereas NPs have 600 hours is you are hiring right out of training.      We find that candidates that are high energy, and show a lot of initiative in driving their training and exposure to procedures do better. The confidence that comes with clinical hours really helps.

    Mike,

    We have 4 R-PA's.

    1. What is the salary of the Mid-Level?  I would say our RPA's are on the high end of pay at $125K-$140K with bonuses
    2. How much time off does the Mid-Level receive annually? 4 Weeks
    3. What fringe benefits they receive?  Everything the docs get: Full paid Health Insurance ($6,500 deductible), $3,500 H.S.A. contribution from the company, 401k with guaranteed 3% + Profit Sharing, Disability, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance
    4. Do they perform weeknight or weekend call of any type?  Not at this time but it has been discussed, but they are Interventional PA's so it doesn't really get the doc off the hook.
    5. Do they perform procedures and if yes, what procedures they perform? A whole host of IR procedures (PICC's, Para's, Thora's, Port Placements, Tube Changes, US guided Biopsies, FNA's, Tu.  Pretty much everything short of vascular interventions.

    Hope you are well!
