  • 1.  Direct Interfaces with Referring Offices

    Hi,

We are a smaller yet growing radiology group practice with an independent imaging center. We are researching the idea of purchasing our own interface engine for multiple reasons. One reason being to set up bi-directional direct interfaces with some of our referring population. I know that this is very common now, but who is paying for the referring side of the interface? Are radiology groups paying? Are we allowed to pay for the interfaces? (Stark law?) Are the referring offices paying? I know my referring population would love to have direct interfaces with us, but will not spend $5,000+. I'm curious if anybody has any experience with this as this is very new territory for us.

    Many thanks!

Several years ago, we pursued but did not offer the interface after consulting with our attorney, who confirmed that it would be a Stark violation.  Smaller medical groups were not willing to invest in the interface.
