Work From Home - Review ergonomics of the employees' home workstations

So, here is a thought concerning employer's responsibility for employees working from home and the potential for the employee to have a less than ideal ergonomic desk arrangement.  This makes it a Work Comp issue.  Much was written about this a few years ago.  We all know the makeshift nature of many of our home computer setups - often not the most ergonomically appropriate, particularly if one is spending 8 hours a day at it.  The general consensus of what I read at the time was that employers may very well have some responsibility to ensure their workspace is as ergonomically appropriate at  home as they do when the employee was in the office.  (Besides a duty, it is also the right thing to do.)

I suggest you speak with communicate your concern and willingness to help to all employees you have work from home.  Offer an ergonomic review.  If they need a monitor stand, buy them one; if they need a foot rest, buy them one; if they need a different mouse, buy them one.  If they need/want a stand-up desk, buy them one.  Document what you provide and, if the employee leaves or is terminated, you can ask them to return it to you (if you wish to do so).  Don't sweat the small cost items. Little things go a long way.  In short, do what you can to make sure their home workspace is as ergonomically appropriate as you would if you gave them a desk at the office.  You will be doing the right thing for them and they will appreciate it.

You may also want to run this by your Work Comp carrier representative for advice.
