  • 1.  Sharholders who work remotely (out of state)

How has your practice approached the issue of radiologists who need to move out of state for a family circumstance but want to remain with the practice?   Given the market, do you allow them to work from out of state or do you have any guardrails in place to prevent all radiologists choosing to live elsewhere?  We have allowed one Shareholder who participates in our nighthawk pool to live out of state.   This places a burden on the others who must cover downtimes in the middle of the night (rare but happens.).  It also has its own "guardrail" because its for only the Nighthawk shift.   Most radiologists prefer to lessen their commute and work from home on occasion.  We have seats in the practice that allow this and it adds to job satisfaction,  If more rads want to work from out of state, then the radiologists within commuting distance carry a greater burden as they have to cover the seats that require physical presence.   Is there a financial carrot/stick or other incentive to equalize this disparity and mitigate risk ? Interested in solutions you may have implemented or are considering.   Thank you.

Our group has come across this same issue. In order to avoid issues we have only allowed special accommodations that the group could support offering to everyone. That being said our current partnership structure requires that partnership radiologists participate in equal call, thus all partners would need to reside in the area. We have had partners request to move out of state and we are looking at buying them out and offering them an employee contract to do so. Otherwise the group would quickly be unable to staff the call slot if half of our partners decided they wanted to live elsewhere. So far those radiologists have decided to stay rather than leave and take a pay cut.

Since your group has already allowed this you could look at restructuring the partnership pay so that those onsite receive a premium or higher percentage.
