What are most practices doing regarding tail coverage?

Does your ins policy include tail coverage?
Does your company pay for a separate tail policy when the physician leaves?
Does your company require the departing physician to pay for their own tail policy, and if so, does your company kick in any reimbursement for that policy?

    Hi Janene

One of the states where we operate has free tail through the state fund after a certain period of time.  If the departing physician isn't eligible for free tail coverage under that program, we require them to pay for it.

I can't say what most are doing, but I would say that most of the docs we have had join us from other groups are paying for their tail coverage, and we reimburse that as a business expense deducted from their bonus pool.

We only buy occurrence policies so no tail is necessary.

Hi Janene - There is a hot topic poll on this issue the RBMA did in 2021.   Suspect the info collected in 2021 won't be very different now.

Agree with David, that most of the time your counsel and broker will advise against providing nose coverage to a radiologist leaving a practice to come to your practice.
We can't find occurence coverage in our state.

If a radiologist leaves our practice, to join another or if a radiologist is in breach of contract, they pay the tail.
If we terminate a radiologist (without cause), practice pays the tail.
Rads who retire from our practice after 10 years of service, get a free tail.

For our practice, if a physician leaves voluntarily or for cause, they’re required to pay the costs of tail. If a physician retires and will no longer practice, they qualify for free tail. For physicians coming from other practices to our group, we’ve not ever paid their tail on the front end, but we’re starting to hear those requests more and more, and we’d most like try handle it as David has indicated. However, it may become part of the recruitment package, depending on what subspecialty you’re recruiting (depending on scarcity, competitiveness, etc.).

We provide Occurrence coverage from day one.  Our philosophy has always been to make sure the practice is covered.
